A day at the beach should feel relaxing, but getting everyone’s food ready can sometimes feel like preparing for a small expedition.

I’ve learnt that beach food doesn’t need to be elaborate. A little preparation and a few clever supermarket shortcuts can give you enough food for the day without spending hours in the kitchen prepping.

These simple meal prep ideas can be adapted depending on how many people you are feeding, how long you plan to stay and whether you are packing lunch, snacks or an easy sunset meal.

1. Use a simple beach meal formula

Instead of filling your cooler bag with lots of random food, keep it simple:

  • One easy main meal
  • Some fresh fruit
  • One crunchy snack
  • One small treat
  • Plenty of cold drinks

This is usually enough for a relaxed half day at the beach. If you’re staying for longer, add another main meal.

2. Make sandwiches with fresh bakery bread

Sometimes the simplest beach lunch is also the best: fresh bread filled with your family’s favourite ingredients.

The Welbee’s bakery has a wide selection of freshly baked bread, rolls and baguettes that are ideal for preparing sandwiches to take to the beach.

Keep the fillings simple and choose ingredients that travel well, such as:

  • The classic: ‘Maltese ‘biz-zejt’
  • Ham and cheese
  • Tuna and sweetcorn
  • Chicken and mayo
  • Turkey, cheese and cucumber
  • Mozzarella, pesto and roasted vegetables
  • Meat and egg

You can even buy your bread in advance and place it straight into the freezer while it is still fresh. On the morning of your beach day, take it out and leave it to defrost at room temperature, covered with a clean dishcloth. Once it has thawed, prepare your sandwiches as usual. The bread will taste almost as fresh as it did on the day you bought it.

3. Prepare easy wraps

Wraps are another one of my favourite beach meal prep ideas because they are easy to make, carry and eat without needing plates or cutlery.

You could fill them with:

  • Ham, cheese and cucumber
  • Chicken, lettuce and a little mayonnaise
  • Hummus, turkey and crunchy vegetables
  • Pesto, mozzarella and roasted vegetables
  • Tuna, sweetcorn and cream cheese

Roll each wrap tightly and pack it whole, or cut it into smaller pieces for children. Wrapping them individually also makes it easier for everyone to grab their own when they are hungry.

Avoid adding too many watery ingredients, or you’ll risk ending up with watery wraps.

4. Make individual beach snack boxes

If your family prefers grazing to eating one large lunch, prepare individual snack boxes. We absolutely love these for the beach!

Fill each container with a simple combination of:

  • Cheese cubes
  • Cold cuts
  • Crackers
  • Cucumber or carrot sticks
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Olives
  • A small pot of hummus or another favourite dip

They are also an easy way to use small amounts of food that you already have in the fridge.

5. Prepare one filling pasta or couscous salad

If you would prefer something a little more filling, prepare a cold pasta or couscous salad the evening before and use it as your main beach meal.

Keep the ingredients simple. You could combine:

  • Pasta, pesto, mozzarella and cherry tomatoes
  • Couscous, tuna, cucumber and sweetcorn
  • Pasta, cooked chicken, peppers and a light dressing
  • Couscous, feta, olives and chopped vegetables

My ‘All the Goodness Pasta Salad’ is a great option too.

Pack the salad in individual containers to make serving easier, and don’t forget to pack forks.

6. Take a shortcut with freshly cut fruit

Fruit is perfect for a hot beach day, but washing, peeling and chopping several different types can add quite a bit of preparation.

The freshly cut fruit from Fresh by Ella at Welbee’s is an easy shortcut. Choose from the available fruit cups, sliced watermelon, melon, pineapple or mixed fruit and place them straight into your cooler bag.

7. Let the snack aisle do some of the work

Meal prep doesn’t mean that everything has to be homemade.

Add one or two easy snacks such as:

  • Crackers
  • Popcorn
  • Crisps
  • Cereal bars
  • Nuts
  • Mini sweet treats

Individually packed snacks are particularly useful if you are taking children or spending the entire day out.

8. Keep everything cold and pack it properly

A good cooler bag makes all the difference when you are taking food to the beach. The Welbee’s 10-litre Grey Cooler Bag is a practical size for keeping your sandwiches, wraps, fruit and drinks neatly packed and chilled.

For a family beach day, you could even use two…one for food and another for drinks. This makes everything easier to organise and stops the food cooler from being opened every time someone wants a drink.

Freeze one or two bottles of water the night before, leaving a little space inside each bottle for the water to expand. The frozen bottles will help keep the cooler cold and, once they begin to melt, you will also have chilled water to drink.

Pack plenty of ice packs around the food and pack everything already chilled. Think about the order in which you will eat everything too. If you plan to have fruit first thing in the morning, for example, place it somewhere easily accessible near the top. Items you will not need until lunchtime can go farther down.

Be mindful of delicate foods that could easily be squashed. Pack cut fruit, sandwiches and other softer items inside sturdy containers, place heavier items lower down and keep anything fragile near the top.

9. Prepare what you can the evening before

The best way to avoid rushing on the morning of your beach day is to do most of the work the previous evening.

You can:

  • Prepare your wraps or snack boxes
  • Make your pasta or couscous salad
  • Chill all your drinks
  • Freeze your water bottles
  • Portion the dry snacks
  • Place your ice packs in the freezer
  • Put napkins, reusable cutlery, wipes and a rubbish bag together

If you are making sandwiches with frozen bakery bread, leave the fillings prepared in the fridge and assemble the sandwiches once the bread has defrosted in the morning.

Then, all you need to do is transfer the chilled food into your cooler bag, add the ice packs and leave.

10. Sunset or evening beach time

For a sunset swim or an easy evening meal by the sea, you could pre-order something from the Welbee’s Platter Catalogue, collect it on your way and add cold drinks, napkins and any serveware you need.

It really can be as simple as: pick up, arrive and eat.

Several Welbee’s locations are conveniently placed when heading towards popular swimming areas:

  • Welbee’s Mellieħa for Għadira and the northern beaches
  • Welbee’s Qawra for the Buġibba and Qawra coastline
  • Welbee’s Paceville for St George’s Bay
  • Welbee’s Balluta, Spinola or Sliema for the St Julian’s and Sliema coast
  • Welbee’s Shoreline for the Kalkara and Rinella area

Platters need to be ordered in advance, so look through the catalogue, choose what you want and confirm the most convenient collection point before your beach day.

It is such an easy option for a sunset gathering with friends, a spontaneous family evening or one of those days when you want to enjoy the beach without doing any meal prep at all.

11. Keep your beach meal prep simple

The best beach food isn’t necessarily the most impressive. It is food that travels well, stays fresh and can be eaten without too much fuss.

Choose one or two of these meal prep ideas, use ready-prepared options where they save you time and pack everything into your cooler bag.

You can find bakery bread, sandwich fillings, freshly cut fruit, snacks, drinks, cooler bags and other beach day essentials at your nearest Welbee’s…or shop online instead.
